Physicians moving, or considering moving out of clinical medicine might do well to consider positions in the life insurance industry.

Craig Davidson MD, speaking at the SEAK Non-Clinical Careers for Physicians Conference gave some of the industry benchmarks.

Life Insurance Medical Directors:

• 52% insurance industry ≥ 15 years
• 60% full time
• Job title medical director or CMO
• Many also AVP or VP
• 44% work remotely at least part of the time
• 57% board certified in insurance medicine

  • 12% Southeast
• Salary of a Life Insurance Medical Director (full time)
  • Range from 100 – 250k
  • 47% between $151,000 and $200,000
  • Most also had bonuses
  • 31% received stock options and grants
